Outdoor Area Rugs As Exterior Design Items

by Mary Parker

When choosing an area rug to compliment your back or front yard, there are some things to keep in mind: Where will you place the rug? Are you going to place it on the ground or on your patio or porch? What type of style or feel are you going for with your rug You need to determine these things before actually buying your new rug.

Optimally, you want a durable rug that can withstand abuse from the elements, as well as any other things such as pets. For this reason, you should consider a rug made of mold and fade-resistant fiber. All-weather olafin is a good choice for any outdoor rug as it resists the elements and bamboo is ecologically sound. It is also soil, stain and fade resistant. Synthetic or natural, both fibers are easy to clean and a great choice for an outdoor area rug.

The price of your rug will vary depending on the materials it is made from, as well as the general quality. Outdoor area rugs made of synthetic fibers such as olafin or polypropylene are typically more affordable than bamboo or those constructed of natural fibers. Handmade as opposed to machine made will also determine the price. The larger the size of the rug, the more expensive it will be. If you determine your budget before shopping, you will be able to easily figure out what you can get.

When choosing a color for an outdoor area rug, darker hues and patterns help create a comfortable feel. They will also show less dirt but will absorb heat. Lighter colors make that area look larger, though they absorb less heat but will show more soil and have to be cleaned more often.

The size of an outdoor rug is important as well. Be sure that you choose a rug that is neither too large for the area nor too small. If the rug is going under a table, it should extend out from underneath approximately one foot. A rug for an outdoor room, such as an enclosed patio, should stop with at least a foot of floor space from the wall to the rug itself. An outdoor area rug that is too large takes away from the detail and crisp lines or curves the rug should create.

Rugs even have their uses outside of your home. Just as if you were designing the interior of your home, you also must put care and attention into the outside as well. The look of the area can be altered with little expense by just rolling up your outdoor area rug and replacing it with another.
