One environmentally-friendly home improvement project is the installation of secondary double glazing. While traditional window replacement requires a lengthy removal and installation, secondary double glazing units fit right over your existing windows, allowing the project to be done over the course of weeks or months, and minimizing the impact on household routines and your home?s appearance.
Horizontal sliding units are the most popular and commonly used type of secondary double glazing. Available in various custom-fit sizes, this type of double glazing is usually installed on tracks which allow the units to slide easily; tightly-fitting seals provide excellent temperature and noise insulation. These are especially suitable for casement and picture windows, and are often used in historic buildings to help protect older windows.
Vertical sliding secondary double glazing units are intended to fit over existing vertical sliding windows; they rely on friction to hold them up when they are opened. These two-part units are among the most complex types of secondary double glazing, and are often used in private homes.
Lift-out secondary double glazing is one of the least expensive and easiest ways to insulate existing windows against sound and the elements. It provides limited access to windows, so it is generally used to insulate fixed windows that do not open and are primarily used to provide light for an area. These units provide excellent thermal insulation and noise reduction.
Hinged secondary double glazing units offer a combination of insulation value and unobtrusive appearance. Available in single and double hinge models, they are useful for covering French doors and other hinged windows, since they move on the same axis as existing windows and doors.
For windows that do not open, fixed units are the most convenient and appropriate form of secondary double glazing. These include door panels, decorative windows, and certain skylights; these units are permanently affixed over the existing windows to reduce noise and provide insulation.
Vertical slider secondary double glazing units are among the most complex, since both parts must be able to slide and yet maintain tension to hold them in place. These are also the most commonly used in private homes, since they are designed to fit over a similar type of window often found in home construction.
The existing windows and the desired d?cor determine what material is most suitable for secondary double glazing. UPVC is most often used for slider units, since it is lightweight and offers good durability. Many double-glazed replacement windows use UPVC because of its high value and lower costs; it stands up to repeated use and offers an attractive and unobtrusive appearance. Aluminum units are slightly more durable, but weigh and cost more. Most aluminum secondary double glazing has a white vinyl coating, making it virtually indistinguishable from UPVC in most cases. Hardwood secondary double glazing is a specialty product, intended to preserve the look of an older home by replicating its existing window frame?s appearance.
